The Fruitful Potager
Mespilus germanica. Old fashioned unusual fruit
Add to your home orchard with this ancient fruit. Small tree or bush with fruits like large rosehips. Eaten when over-ripe (squishy) the flavour is often described as similar to apple or cinnamon. Fruit does not transport well so you don't find medlars for sale in shops. Seem to be a love em or loath em kindof fruit possibly because of the soft texture when ripe but can also be used for jellies and other cooking. Deciduous, broadly spreading nice looking tree has ornamental value also. Often grows quite crooked and knarled with age. Once common in gardens. 3-5m tall. Currently 1.35m tall. Containerised.
